About the Designer
My name is Zivia Rich. I'm a born and raised Seattlite, and a graduate of Pacific Lutheran Univerisity, where I earned a BFA in Tech/Design Theatre and a BA in Studio Arts.
I've been writing fiction since I was able to pick up a pencil. What most inspires me about costume design is its ability to convey character and subtly further the story, either by showing how a character chooses to present themselves, or portraying their mental state, or displaying a character's wealth or status, and so on. This, in my opinion, is the place the costume design and fashion design most distinctly fork.
Historical fashion is one of my primary focuses in costuming. I believe that drawing from the past can help us portray the future, or even other worlds all together. It's not simply a matter of research, it's a framework for looking at any body of work. After all, what separates last year's outdated fashion trends from the walking suits of 100 years ago but a bit of time? History is an important thing to take into account no matter what setting a production has. It's through these lenses, history, fashion and character, that I carefully examine each show that I'm given the privilege of working on.
